Who Makes a Good Candidate for Vein Procedure?

Visible symptoms of vein health issues

Whether you suffer from small, barely noticeable spider veins or large, bulging and embarrassing varicose veins, there’s a vein treatment that’s ideal for your situation. Today’s vein treatment options are much less invasive than previous methods such as vein stripping, making them more accessible to a wider range of patients. But how do you know if you need a vein procedure? In today’s post, we are going to learn more about when you should seek therapy for your vein problems and how to know if you’re a good candidate for vein therapy.

Common Symptoms of Vein Disease

Certain symptoms can indicate that it might be time to consider seeking medical intervention for your vein problems. These symptoms include pain, aches, cramps or charley horses in the legs; swelling of the legs or ankles; itching or burning; wounds, sores or ulcers on the legs; a heavy feeling in the legs; and changes in the color or texture of the skin on the legs or ankles.

If you experience any of these symptoms, a thorough medical exam is definitely warranted, and you’ll likely benefit from one of the vein treatment options currently available.

Safety and Discomfort Considerations

For many people with vein problems, worries about safety or the pain associated with vein therapy prevents them from seeking treatment.

Vein stripping in particular, which was the conventional treatment for many years, came with pain and a lengthy recovery period. However, today there are several other vein treatment options, including ClariVein, which is a type of Mechanical Occlusion Chemically Assisted (MOCA) treatment, and one that we offer here at Alpha Vein Clinic. In fact, Dr. Sassan Kaveh is one of the only physicians in Nevada that offers this virtually  painless procedure.

There’s also Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA), which is far less invasive than earlier surgical methods. This means that you won’t have to be out of commission  from your regular activities for an extended period with these particular treatments.

What about Spider Veins?

Although spider veins are considered cosmetic and do not require more extensive treatments themselves, they are often an indicator of deeper vein issues. Before simply getting sclerotherapy, which can take care of the surface problem, you should still have a venous ultrasound to determine if the problem is due to Chronic Venous Insufficiency of deeper veins.

This is especially true if you are also experiencing any of the symptoms previously mentioned. For example, if you have spider veins and are experiencing restless leg syndrome, you most likely have vein disease in a vein which is not visible on the surface.

Who is Not a Good Candidate?

That being said, not everyone is a candidate for every type of therapy, even though these methods are safe and minimally invasive. For example, if you are pregnant or bedridden, you should wait to pursue treatment.

Are Treatments Covered By Health Insurance?

Although varicose veins used to be considered cosmetic, more and more medical insurance companies are recognizing treatments for Chronic Venous Insufficiency as a medical necessity. This is because the symptoms associated with vein disease are much more severe than previously thought. If left untreated, vein disease can potentially be debilitating. Chances are, your insurance will cover most, if not all, of the costs.
