Why is my skin so itchy? Effects of vein disease on the skin

Itchy skin is a symptom seen with many medical conditions, yet it is also one that is often neglected due to it’s difficulty to control if a definite cause isn’t found. One condition that people don’t often associated with itchy skin (including many medical professionals) is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). If you’re suffering from constant itch and ask yourself “Why is my skin so itchy?”, you may have underlying vein disease.

What is CVI?

If you have CVI, valves in your veins (usually in the leg or sometimes the arms) don’t work, causing blood to pool in your legs and putting increased pressure on the walls of the veins. This pressure can cause fluids to leak into the tissues, and therefore causing an inflammatory response. Skin conditions such as statis dermatitis or even leg ulcers may result. A chronic skin condition that has often been considered a mystery by many physicians is Lichen Simplex Chronicus. However, this skin disorder has links to CVI.

What is Lichen Simplex Chronicus?

Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) is an itchy skin condition causing thickened skin at the areas of skin injured by repeated scratching and rubbing. It is not a primary disease but rather the skin’s response to chronic physical injury (trauma). The gradual thickening of skin, caused by repetitive scratching and rubbing, is called lichenification. Lichen simplex chronicus begins as itchy skin. Itching leads to scratching and rubbing, which causes thickening of skin. Thickened skin is itchy, which causes more scratching and, thus, more skin thickening. This scratch-itch cycle then continues if it is not treated.

While LSC can develop as a result of conditions such as insect bites, scars, eczema, and dry skin, a condition that is often overlooked by many medical professionals is chronic venous insufficiency. As discussed, chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the veins of the legs weaken and allow blood to pool in the legs. This poor circulation can greatly exacerbate this grueling condition.

At Alpha Vein Clinic, Dr Sassan Kaveh is highly in tune with the many symptoms of venous insufficiency including lichen simplex chronicus. Dr Sassan Kaveh has had great success in helping his patients finally rid themselves of their skin condition by treating the underlying cause: vein disease.
