DO YOU STAND ALL DAY? YOU ARE AT RISK!

Prolonged periods of standing?  Well if you are like most Americans this is part of your daily work schedule to stand also part of daily life. This can not necessarily be avoided especially if you are in one location and not moving around, this will increase your risk for developing varicose veins and other symptoms of venous insufficiency. If you already have symptoms, it would be one of the best decisions you have made, to come visit us here in Las Vegas at the Alpha Vein Clinic. Then Dr. Sassan Kaveh could evaluate the current status of your vein health and, if venous insufficiency is the cause of your symptoms, then he would discuss with you possible minimally invasive treatments that may cure your symptoms. This would then give you the information to decide whether or not conservative therapy with stockings or proceeding on with treatment is right for you. Wearing graded compression stockings should improve your symptoms and reduce the risk of developing venous insufficiency or slow its progression. But most the time by the time we find out about venous insufficiency treatment is very necessary

What causes chronic venous insufficiency?

Veins return blood to the heart from all the body’s organs. To reach the heart, the blood needs to flow upward from the veins in the legs. Calf muscles and the muscles in the feet need to contract with each step to squeeze the veins and push the blood upward. To keep the blood flowing up, and not back down, the veins contain one-way valves.

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when these valves become damaged, allowing the blood to leak backward. Valve damage may occur as the result of extended sitting or standing. When the veins and valves are weakened to the point where it is difficult for the blood to flow up to the heart, blood pressure in the veins stays elevated for long periods of time, leading to (CVI).

What are the risk factors for chronic venous insufficiency?

If you have risk factors for chronic venous insufficiency, you are more likely than other people to develop the disease. Here are some risk factors:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Varicose veins or a family history of varicose veins
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Inactivity
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting
  • Female sex
  • Age over 50

An estimated 40 percent of people in the United States have chronic venous insufficiency. It occurs more frequently in people over age 50, and more often in women than in men. So if your everyday job, life or activities involve standing for more than 4 hours at a time you may be at risk!
