What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) sufferers experience jittery or antsy legs when they lie in bed or sometimes when they are sitting down. The discomfort is relieved only by getting up and standing or walking.

Restless legs can be a symptom of venous reflux (or venous insufficiency) which is a progressive medical condition in which the valves that allow the blood to travel from the legs to the heart no longer function. This can cause blood to pool in the legs and veins to swell. The incorrect blood flow (or reflux) causes the blood to seep into the tissues and cause restless legs.

Other common symptoms of venous reflux include leg pain, leg swelling, leg cramps, leg heaviness and fatigue, as well as, skin discoloration and venous ulcers in more severe cases.

Venous reflux tends to run in families. It is more common after middle age and occurs in both women and men.

What causes restless legs?

In most situations, doctors are unsure what causes or triggers restless leg syndrome, but they suspect it has a lot to do with genetics, exercise, medications, pregnancy, obesity, or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Other factors include alcohol or drug use, smoking, sleep deprivation, lack of mobility, and prolonged standing. Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) can sometimes be temporary, but in other situations it can be a recurring problem that can indicate an underlying vein disease.

Who gets restless legs?

Restless legs affect up to 10% of the population and occur in both sexes; although women are more likely to experience symptoms related to restless legs, especially after pregnancy.

Most people who experience restless legs are middle-aged or older, but can also affect younger people including children.

For individuals with underlying vein conditions including Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), they might experience restless legs and a variety of other symptoms including leg pain, leg swelling & ankle swelling, leg heaviness & fatigue, leg cramps, leg itching, leg ulcers, venous insufficiency, skin discoloration and more.

As varicose veins aren’t always visible, sometimes vein disease can progress without one even suspecting it.

Can restless legs be treated?

If your restless legs are caused by an underlying vein disease, there are a variety of options that we can employ to alleviate your symptoms. Most of these treatments can be performed with little to no discomfort or pain, and performed in an hour or less with an in-patient anesthesia.

Radio Frequency Ablation, ClariVein Ablation, or VenaSeal treatments provide a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery, by simply closing the diseased vein. Once the diseased vein is closed, it becomes scar tissue and is eventually absorbed by the body.

Radio Frequency Ablation uses a highly specialized catheter to be inserted into the vein in order to cauterize the bad vein and close it off for ever. Accordingly, the better and healthier veins will take over. The VenaSeal™ closure system is the only non-tumescent, non-thermal, non-sclerosant procedure that uses a proprietary medical adhesive delivered endovenously to close the vein. ClariVein however uses a combination of chemical and mechanical rotation to shut off the vein.
