Reasons to treat your varicose veins now vs later

Are you suffering from painful, aching varicose veins that hinder your daily activities? Are you dreading the heat of summer because you are self-conscious about the bulging and twisted veins on your legs? Even though you are suffering, you may be putting off seeking treatment for one reason or another. Therefore, you should know that delaying vein treatments can sometimes be harmful. Here are the reasons you should treat your varicose veins now versus later.

Vein disease is progressive

Diseases that are progressive get worse with time. You may think your varicose veins will get better by putting your feet up or wearing compression stockings. Some physicians even wrongfully believe vein disease to be a normal part of aging. The truth is, once you develop vein disease, treating the symptoms does not cure the problem. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is the route of vein disease in the legs. It is caused by weakened valves within the veins that make it difficult for blood to travel back up to the heart. This poor circulation results in blood pooling in the lower extremities hence causing the vein walls to expand. These veins can twist, bulge and protrude through the overlying tissue, hence making them visible on the surface. Vein treatment is the only way to effectively stop this progressive condition in its tracks.

The painful symptoms that accompany CVI include:

  • Pain
  • Aching
  • Burning or tingling
  • Cramping and restless legs
  • Heaviness
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration and texture changes
  • Itching

Vein treatment prevents further damage

If left untreated, varicose veins and other symptoms of vein disease can lead to more serious complications. Some people with venous insufficiency develop stasis dermatitis. As blood pools in the veins of the lower leg fluid and blood cells leak out of the veins into the skin and other tissues. This may lead to itching and inflammation, which cause more skin changes. Over time, some skin changes such as thickening and hardening and changing to a dark brown color in the affected area can become permanent. Blood pooling in the legs for a long period of time can damage the surrounding tissue, leading to the development of venous leg ulcers. These ulcers are often located in the lower leg and ankles. These open, often seeping wounds can become a chronic problem if the underlying circulation issue is not treated. Finally, when diseased veins are treated, blood can be rerouted to healthy veins therefore promoting proper circulation which can help to heal the damaged tissue. Consequently, chronic pain, swelling and recurrent cellulitis (skin infection) are also other complications of untreated vein disease.
