Understanding Radiofrequency Ablation

The Radiofrequency Ablation technique is an advanced vein procedure, cleared by the FDA in 1999. This newer form of vein treatment replaced painful vein stripping as the go-to method of eliminating varicose veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). Fabulous clinical and cosmetic results have been recorded at the 5 and 10 year marks, post-treatment. Radiofrequency Ablation has fewer complications and is far less invasive than surgical vein procedures.

How it works

When you come into Alpha Vein Clinic for your procedure, our physician Dr. Sassan Kaveh will start with introducing local anesthesia. Then, through a small incision below the knee, Dr. Kaveh inserts the ClosureFast™ Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) Catheter up the length of the affected vein. Guided by ultrasound imaging, Dr. Kaveh treats 7 cm segments of vein with bursts of controlled radiofrequency energy heat, causing the vessel to shrink and permanently close. Once the diseased vein is sealed shut, blood naturally re-routes through healthy veins. The treated vein is eventually reabsorbed by the surrounding tissue.

Varicose Veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency

You are absolutely not alone if you suffer from varicose and/or spider veins. About 25 million Americans struggle to get through their day because of vein disease. Varicose veins are not only unappealing to look at, they are painful, throbbing diseased veins. Chronic Venous Insufficiency is progressive, meaning if you have varicose veins, they will only continue to get worse until you seek treatment. A medical procedure is necessary for individuals with CVI to rid them of the harsh symptoms that they may be suffering from. These symptoms include legs that ache, feel heavy, experience cramping and swelling. Vein disease that has progressed can cause itching, skin thickening and even venous ulcers. Many insurance providers understand this, and help cover the cost of treatment.
