Many people do not know that your varicose veins are more than just not fun to look at, yes they are more than just a cosmetic issue let me tell you how.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves and veins in your legs. Normally, one-way valves in your veins keep blood flowing from your legs up toward your heart. When these valves do not work as they should, blood collects in your legs, and pressure builds up. The veins become weak, large, and twisted.

Varicose veins often run in families. Aging also increases your risk.

Being overweight or pregnant or having a job where you must stand or sit for long periods of time increases pressure on leg veins. This can lead to varicose veins.

What are varicose vein symptoms?

Many people with varicose veins do not have any physical symptoms. They may, however, have concerns over the cosmetic appearance of the varicose veins.

Symptoms of varicose veins may include:

  • aching
  • cramping
  • itching
  • swelling
  • fatigue.

Some people may complain of a dull ache and pressure sensation from varicose veins.

Some less common, but more severe symptoms of varicose veins may include bleeding, skin ulceration and a weeping oozing sores on the legs. These complications of varicose veins should be evaluated by us here at the Alpha Vein Clinic Las Vegas as soon as possible if left untreated these conditions can be life threatening.

Can ultrasound be used to evaluate varicose veins?

Duplex ultrasound is very useful in diagnosing and the treatment of the venous system. Ultrasound can help in tracking down the presence of any defective veins and pinpoint those that require treatment. Doppler ultrasound (a device which can detect and measure blood flow) is also great for providing information such as the strength of and flow through the valves in the perforating and the deeper veins. This information is especially necessary if surgery or other procedures are being considered. We do specialize in both Duplex and Doppler ultrasound here in Las Vegas at the Alpha Vein Clinic so we will give you a very complete and thorough evaluation. We also will be able to discuss and know exactly what the best treatment options will be for you and your specific condition. Hince there will be NO guessing involved in your treatment or diagnosis.

How is it treated?

Since the valves in the legs cannot be repaired, the only alternative is to reroute blood flow from the diseased veins to healthy veins. Traditionally, this has been done by surgically removing (stripping) the troublesome vein from your leg. The Radio Frequency procedure or Clarivein, however, provides a less invasive alternative to vein stripping by simply closing the diseased vein. Once the diseased vein is closed, it becomes scar tissue and is eventually absorbed by the body.
