Veins, What Are They Trying to Tell You?

Many of us are so focused on our jobs, families, and often extensive to-do lists that we don’t stop and think much about our bodies — until we get an ache or pain somewhere, or discover some change in our body that we hadn’t noticed before. That’s why it’s important to speak your body’s language, or in this case, the language of your veins. These vital pathways carry blood through the body, and if anything goes wrong with even one of them, there can be serious consequences. That’s why it’s crucial to understand what your veins are telling you.

Are Your Veins Trying To Tell You Something?

The appearance of your veins says a lot about their health and about potential underlying health issues. While it’s not uncommon to be able to partially see some of your veins through your skin, if they become very noticeable it’s likely there’s something wrong. Varicose veins, in particular, can indicate a potentially serious health condition known as Chronic Venous Insufficiency, or CVI. With CVI, the blood doesn’t flow through the veins from the feet to the heart as it’s supposed to. This is due to faulty valves in the particular veins that let some blood to move downward. This can lead to many problematic issues in your lower legs.

Listen Closely

Because the blood doesn’t flow in the proper direction, it may settle and pool in the veins, causing them to bulge, twist and protrude through the skin. This is the condition known as varicose veins, and it can indicate that the veins have become weakened, and may suggest that you suffer from poor circulation. This is why varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue, although for many people their main concern is how unsightly the varicose veins are.

However, they are also a health issue, and even if you’re not bothered by their appearance, you should consult a physician for a thorough medical exam to determine what’s causing them and identify any other health problems. It is highly likely that your varicose veins are causing pain that you may associate with something else but they are actually telling you something is wrong. You may also see spider veins which may be a hint that there is a deeper vein issue. It is important to not ignore what your veins are trying to communicate.

What Else Are Your Veins Saying?

CVI can manifest in several ways, and there are numerous symptoms that can indicate the presence of this condition. Some may seem minor, or you may just assume they’re part of aging, but in fact they are your veins’ way of telling you something is wrong. These symptoms can include: burning and itching of the skin, a heavy feeling in the legs, swelling of the ankles or legs, changes in skin color or texture, and cramps, aches or pains. All of these symptoms are how your veins are telling you that something is wrong, and they are all signs that warrant consulting a physician for a thorough medical examination.
