WHAT IS DVT?
What is deep vein thrombosis or (DVT)?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein located deep inside your body. A blood clot is a clump of blood that is in a jelly or solid form. Deep vein blood clots typically form in your thigh or lower leg, but they can also develop in other areas of your body.
What are the symptoms of (DVT)?
Symptoms of (DVT) only occur in about half of the people who have this condition. Common symptoms are not limited to but include:
- swelling in your foot, ankle, or leg, usually on one side. If your leg is swollen and elevating or icing the leg won’t reduce the swelling then it’s a blood clot
- cramping pain in your affected leg that usually begins in your calf
- severe, unexplained pain in your foot and ankle
- an area of skin that feels warmer than the skin on the surrounding areas
- skin over the affected area turning pale or a reddish or bluish color
People may not find out that they have deep vein thrombosis until they’ve gone through emergency treatment for a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening complication of (DVT) in which an artery in the lung becomes blocked.
Signs of superficial blood clots:
Blood clots in the superficial vein system (closer to the surface of the skin), most often occur due to trauma to the vein, which causes a small blood clot to form. Inflammation of the vein and surrounding skin causes the symptoms similar to any other type of inflammation, for example,
- Redness
- Warmth
- Tenderness
- Swelling
You often can feel the vein as a firm, thickened cord. There may be inflammation that follows the course of part of the leg vein. Although there is inflammation, there is no infection.
Varicosities can predispose to varicose veins. This occurs when the valves of the larger veins in the superficial system fail (the greater and lesser saphenous veins), which allows blood to back up and cause the veins to swell and become abnormal. The valves fail when veins lose their elasticity and stretch. This can be due to age, prolonged standing, obesity, pregnancy, and genetic factors. Varicose Veins can be also formed if one has a history of developing DVT. Here at the Alpha Vein Clinic Las Vegas we can detect (DVT) at the first appointment.
